If you talk to any half-decent chess player, you’re bound to hear the word ‘opening’ within the 5 mins of the discussion on chess. Openings hold the pedestal position in chess among both beginners and grandmasters alike.
Before we can delve into a deeper analysis of various opening, I believe it is very important to have a framework to understand how the Openings are classified to better grasp the huge volume of Opening information in Chess.
I classify Openings into 4 genres
Open Games (anything that starts with 1. e4, e5)
Semi-Open Games (when black choose to respond with anything other than e5 to white’s e4)
Closed Games (when white begins with 1. d4)
Semi-Closed Games (when white decides on starting with anything other than the traditional e4 & d4)
As the names suggest, these openings have the tendency to lead into a game that could be open, closed or somewhere in between.
For now, it would suffice to keep this framework in mind as we delve deeper into various chess openings.
